The belay brake, Grigri, is an Auto braking device for belayers. If a fall occurs the pivoting cam inside the device facilitates braking. The Grigri is attached to the belayer's harness with the belay rope passing through the device. When locked this allows the belayer's full weight (plus ballast bag if attached) to be used to counterbalance the climber without all the load passing through the belayer's hands.
